Here's how it works: When an Area Development reader is interested in state specific content and data, the natural place for he or she to land is a state resource page. Each state has a dedicated landing page that has aggregated all Area Development features about that state, business expansion and re-location news, vital state demographics and industry data, links to available properties on FastFacility and information on state incentives and taxes.

Of course all of that valuable information is still available on the state resource pages. But now, when a user lands on a state page, the first thing he or she will see is an interactive state map powered by FacilityLocations. From this map the reader can easily research select economic development contacts, visualize business expansions, re-locations and other data layers and search for available FastFacility property listings.
FacilityLocations is a tool that executives use to compile short-lists of location candidates, connect with economic development professionals from those locations and connect with business consultants who can assist in each facet of the site selection process.

How it Works
When clicking Select Site markers (which represent locations) on state and province landing page maps, the user drills-down into a complete profile of that location. Each location profile includes a robust data set and tools (available properties, logistical and real-estate assets, demographics layers and reports etc..) from which the user can determine if the location might be a potential candidate for a short-list. Once that short-list is compiled, the user can take advantage of our economic development organization directory to make a connection to a local representative or send a RFI. Our users can also use the FacilityLocations business services directory to connect with consultant's who can assist your business in all facets of the site selection process.

Updates
We have been working tirelessly to bring more and more economic development organization's into the fold to represent their locations as Select Sites. The more Select Sites we sign-up the more location profile pages the user can access with deep data sets and demographics reports. So far we have added 140 Select Site location profiles throughout the United States and Canada.

We are also committed to an on-going campaign of researching and updating every single economic development organization and contact within North America and beyond. Since March we have added or updated 3500 economic contacts to our directory. We currently have 5900 total economic development contacts.

Future Plans
More Consultants: We are currently working on building the consultants directory within FacilityLocations (so far we have 350 listed). For many organizations, the entire site selection process cannot be bootstrapped. There are certain facets that must be handled by a business services professional. We currently have a strong directory focused on "site selection" consultants. Many of these professionals have experience in assisting with all of the factors of the site selection process (tax and incentives negotiation, in-depth location analysis etc..). We are working on enhancing the directory to (1) make it easy for the user to identify which specific discipline these professionals specialize in and (2) expand the disciplines and services that we cover within the directory (architecture services, construction, environmental, workforce development etc..). We are also working enhancing the UI so that the user can easily search and filter listings according to the specific discipline and service category that is required.

More Data on State and Province Maps: While the user navigates state and province maps for Select Site location's to drill into for deep research, it is helpful if there are other data layers to add context to the Select Site locations. Currently, we have layers for geo-tagged local real estate news (powered by Area Development) and foreign trade zones. But, we are planning to add a whole lot more. We are currently researching or developing layers for population density, income level, education level, industry clusters, broadband access and business incubators/accelerators. We are also collecting data for different types of development organizations...

More Variety in Economic Development Organizations: Our directory comprehensively covers all local, regional, and state-level economic development organizations. We are currently efforting the inclusion of university-level economic development and tech-transfer departments and industry-specific economic development organizations.

If you have any suggestions for data sets or layers that you would like to see included on state/province maps or on location profile maps please use the green "feedback" tab that is positioned on the left side of most pages throughout FacilityLocations (including this one). If you would like to add or update an economic development organization listing please use the link at the top of the FacilityLocations homepage. Finally, if your are an economic developer and your organization is interested in representing your location as a Select Site on FacilityLocations, please click here to learn more.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-822357177279675725.post-8591098626540539232011-08-16T10:58:00.002-04:002012-01-10T14:39:38.325-05:00Select Site Digest: County of Brant, Ontario

While the FacilityLocations maps are not powered by Bing Maps (we use ArcGIS servers and API's), we chose to license the Bing map as the base for our map application because we liked it's aesthetic (ironically). The bad news is we were forced to go with the base map look changes recently deployed by Bing and were never given the option to stick with the old Bing base maps. But, here's the good news...the new Bing base maps look awesome!!! They have simplified the look and feel of the map and reduced a lot of clutter. The new changes are allowing the data sets and tools that FacilityLocations layers over the Bing base map to really stand out for the user.
In doing so we have ironed some initial developmental wrinkles and bugs in an effort to build an intuitive, fast and reliable experience for the user as they research locations for their expanding or re-locating business on FacilityLocations.

There is a long laundry list of bugs and enhancements that have been addressed over the last few months. A few key enhancements will strongly impact the user experience, enhancing the ability of a user to easily navigate maps and research potential locations...

Map Speed: We have supercharged the map applications that are featured on regional landing pages and Select Site location profile pages. Maps now load much faster when a regional or Select Site location profile page is requested and, panning, zooming and navigating our maps has become a much more fluid and seamless experience.

Demographic Reports Download Speed: One of the coolest features of FacilityLocations is the ability to generate radius demographic reports for Select Site locations using the map tools on each Site Site's profile page. But, no one wants to wait around for a long time while the reports generate. Because reports are generated on the fly based on a users exact focal point and radius distance request, and the behind-the-scenes process that goes on when a report is requested is quite complicated (requests and calculations are made between a few different background applications and servers), it has been challenge to create a tool that is powerful enough to give you a fast and accurate demographics report....But, we've got it working pretty darn good now. Reports are now fully and accurately generated in well under a minute (and in less then 20 seconds typically). Stay tuned for a future in-depth post explaining how the radius demographics tool works...

Tab Filters on State/Province Page Maps: We have updated the filters on our state and province maps so that they can be easily minimized to enlarge the map area. The layout has been simplified so the user can intuitively turn data layers on and off and easily identify correlating map markers and data layers.

Old Layout

Our number one priority is to bring an easy-to-use yet powerful resource to our users. Anyone who has done any web development knows that the process never really ends. No matter how exhaustive the initial development is, and no matter how many stones need to be turned before the site launch, the site cannot become a true success until the users have their say. So, any ideas, comments or insight you may have after touring FacilityLocations would be very much appreciated. To do so, please use the feedback tab that is positioned in the left margin of most FacilityLocations pages.

Data Tweaking
Also, please keep in mind that there is much tweaking and massaging yet to be done with our listings data. We added close to 4,000 ED listings today including over 80 Select Sites and, we still have a few thousand left to port over. Unfortunately, the automated process of porting the data into our DB wasn't as bullet proof as we had hoped, so you might see some missing contact names and such for the time being.

Select Site Profile Pages
Also, there is ALOT of data to be added for each select site including video, news feeds, location assets and available properties. We are still in the process of connecting our site to the demographics engine so, for the time being, it is not possible to produce demographic reports.
Today, we launched FacilityLocations in public beta mode. The launch is an important milestone after months of hard work by an amazing development team. We were able to go public after only a few weeks of private beta which is further testament to the great work that has been happening behind the scenes.
What is FacilityLocations?
For those of you that have happened upon this post by chance, or after seeing the link to FacilityLocations in Area Development, let me give you a brief synopsis of what FacilityLocations is all about...In short, we are a resource for business executives and site consultants looking to research locations for expansion or re-location and/or connect with economic development professionals from those locations.

How does FacilityLocations work?
If you are jumping on FacilityLocations from our homepage all you have to do is choose the general region you would like search and then click to go to the landing page of that region (U.S. state landing pages, Canadian Province landing pages, and landing pages for many countries all over the globe).

Landing Pages
There are two ways to find locations and economic development professionals on our landing pages:

1. Within a a traditional directory including local and regional economic development contacts, port authority contacts, utility contacts, foreign trade zone contacts and foreign inward investment contacts.

2. Search and identify potential site and facility locations within a GIS-driven map on each landing page. Click on Select Site listings of economic development organizations within the directory window or roll over Select Site listing markers on the map with your cursor to see the service area of each Select Site and a description of the location. Then, drill-down into Select Site locations by clicking on the “Location Profile” button to access robust location data and information. Also, roll-over and click “AD” markers to see recent, local site selection and facility news items powered by Area Development Online.

Profile Pages
The user can drill down into any Select Site listing found on the landing page map. We think the Select Site Profile Pages will become a "go to" tool for business executives and site consultants as they research potential locations during the early stages of the Site Selection process. The tools found on the profile page will enable the user to research a location that may already be on a short list or find data and information on a location that wasn't even a consideration before researching our site and maps. Some of the tools on the Profile Page:

Advanced GIS-Driven Mapping

Google Streetview and Bing BirdsEye Imagery

Heat Maps, Data Layers

Downloadable, Point-and-Click Radius Demographics Reports

Available Property Listings and Key RE Assets

Live News and Video Feeds

Location Overview & Measurement Tools
